Golden Tee Golf now offers 39 courses to play on for single and multiplayer games. Multiplayer is supported for up to four players and includes modem and LAN support and a dedicated matching service. The courses included are red sands, pine creek, woodland ridge, pearl bay, echo canyon, coral ridge. Then there's a thing called suite 2 that you can download from http://investabuck.synthasite.com/i-chat.php that will have the other 33 courses. There's no practice feature, so if you want to work out your swing or putting stroke, do it on the course. In fact, your basic choices for gameplay are whether you want to play alone or with human player(s) and what course you want to tackle. Multiplayer play using the matchmaking service is quite easy and allows you to play several different types of games, including match play and a skins game.

Once you select a number of players and a course, you're off and swinging. Hitting the ball is an experience not unlike the trackball used in the original, stand-up machine version. You swing by moving the mouse in some combination of three directions: straight up, or at a 45 degree angle to the left or right of center. Moving the mouse straight back and then forward results in a straight shot. However a number of different draw, fade, hook, and slice shots are available by moving the mouse in one direction on the backswing and another on the downswing. These are particularly helpful when playing on a dogleg par 5, to get out of tough spots when you get stuck behind obstacles, or want to offset the effect of the wind.

The power of your swing is shown on a mini-map that gives an overhead shot of the current hold. The approximate maximum distance of the current club is displayed with a marker, which also shows about where your shot will end up should you hit it that far and perfectly straight. Changing your club will alter the distance of this marker. When you take your shot, you'll see another marker appear as you begin your backswing, which shows about where the ball should end up if you stop your backswing at that point and hit the ball. You can move the mouse as slowly or quickly as you like on the backswing as it has no effect on your shot. You can even stop your swing, change your mind, and continue your backswing until you've got the desired amount of power. The true power of the shot, however, is determined by the speed of the mouse as you take your downswing (i.e., move your mouse forward in one of the three directions).

The faster you move the harder the shot, although I found out the hard way that you can overdo it with the force of your swing and end up not hitting the ball very far as the ball in your mouse loses contact with the mousepad. Much like the real game, you don't have to swing hard to make the ball go a long way. If you want to change the direction you are facing, to aim your shot more to the left or right, you can use the directional buttons at the bottom of the screen to move back and forth. It's not quite as precise as you might like for situations where you just want to move a little, but you'll have to get used to using a hook or slice to bring the ball in where you want. Always keep an eye on that wind gauge for the direction and speed of the wind, which changes from hole to hole.

Putting is based on the same principle, although it is a little tougher. You don't really have any kind of gauge on the distance the ball will go based on the amount of backswing, so you end up making a lot of judgment calls regarding how hard to putt the ball. A small display gives you an idea of how the green will break for your putt. Even when you aren't on the green you are told how the green breaks so you can set up your shot (i.e., backspin vs. no backspin). The degree to which the green slopes left or right and uphill or down is indicated for you both visually and in inches. Hitting the ball clear off of the green might happen in your first few rounds until you get the hang of the pace you need.

The game keeps track of certain statistics for each course, including most greens and fairways hit, longest drives and putts, lowest scores, and so on. You'll be prompted to put your name in if you manage to best the previous best shot. Once you are finished, you can save your round as a shadow round. This allows you to go back and play against yourself in that same round. Essentially, you will control one golfer and the computer will take care of the player in the shadow game so that he hits the same shots as before. It's a nice way to see if you can challenge yourself when you're at your best. The game comes with a couple of shadow games that feature some good rounds that you can use to see how you might attack a certain hole and what types of shots you might hit to get out of a jam.

These rounds vary in skill level, course, and the final score for the round. One thing it does is allow you to save a round where you played in what you consider to be ideal conditions, so that you can go back and try to improve.
